6 Day Moroccan Wildlife Journey: Marrakech to the Edge of the Sahara

Your 6 Day Moroccan Wildlife begins with your arrival in the historic city of Marrakech. As you settle in, take some time to soak in the atmosphere of this vibrant city—famous for its red sandstone architecture, buzzing souks, and the call to prayer echoing from ancient minarets. Rest up for the journey ahead, as tomorrow takes you deep into the south, toward the edge of the Sahara.

After breakfast, you leave the bustle of Marrakech behind and begin a scenic drive toward Mhamid El Ghizlane, a remote Saharan outpost near the Algerian border. The route winds through the High Atlas Mountains and past the gateway city of Ouarzazate, before descending into the Draa Valley’s palm groves and desert plateaus.

If time allows upon arrival, you may begin exploring the surrounding desert plains with chances to spot iconic Saharan wildlife such as the Addax antelope, North African Ostrich, and possibly Dorcas Gazelle. These species are rare and elusive, making any encounter a truly special experience. Overnight in Mhamid El Ghizlane, where the desert sky comes alive with stars.

After breakfast, you venture deeper into the semi-arid steppe and desert expanses around Mhamid. This region, once part of ancient trans-Saharan caravan routes, now serves as a unique habitat for rewilding efforts. With local trackers, you may encounter Addax antelope, Ostrich, and Dorcas Gazelles grazing across open plains.

As the day warms, keep a sharp eye out for reptiles, including the elusive and beautifully adapted Horned Viper (Cerastes cerastes), a true master of camouflage in the sands. After a full day of wildlife tracking and photography, return to Mhamid for dinner and a well-earned rest.

Another early start gives you the best chance to observe desert birdlife, particularly various species of sandgrouse (gangas) known for their incredible desert survival adaptations and striking plumage. You’ll also continue tracking Addax, Ostrich, and gazelle, with photography opportunities during the soft morning and late afternoon light.

Today’s outing may also include visits to water points or remote wadis (dry riverbeds), where wildlife often gathers. After another fulfilling day of exploration, return to Mhamid for your final night at the edge of the Sahara.

After breakfast, you begin your journey back to Marrakech, retracing your route through the Draa Valley, past Ouarzazate, and back over the High Atlas Mountains. While it's mostly a travel day, there will be scenic stops along the way, offering one last chance to appreciate the diverse landscapes of southern Morocco from stark desert flats to mountain passes.

Upon arrival in Marrakech by late afternoon or evening, enjoy your final night in the city, perhaps with a relaxing dinner or a stroll through the medina.

Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for some last-minute shopping or sightseeing in Marrakech before heading to the airport. As you depart, you carry with you lasting memories and perhaps a few prized photographs of Morocco’s wild, seldom-seen side: a land of sand, silence, and surprising life.
