7 Days Morocco Herping Tour

Arrival in Agadir at any time during the day. After arrival, transfer to the hotel and time to rest after the journey.

The remainder of the day is free to relax, organize equipment, and prepare for the days of field exploration ahead.

After breakfast, the journey begins south along Morocco’s Atlantic coast toward Sidi Ifni. The drive passes coastal plains and cliffs shaped by the Atlantic winds, gradually entering landscapes that support a variety of reptiles and amphibians.

During the afternoon, several promising habitats around Sidi Ifni may be explored, including rocky slopes and quiet rural roads. As evening approaches, the cooler temperatures often bring reptiles out of hiding, making night surveys particularly productive.

Leaving the coast behind, the route turns inland toward Guelmim, often called the gateway to the Sahara. The landscape gradually becomes drier as desert plains and rocky terrain begin to dominate the scenery.In the afternoon the surrounding desert habitats are explored in search of reptiles such as Uromastyx nigriventris, Chamaeleo chamaeleon, Spalerosophis dolichospilus, and Malpolon monspessulanus saharatlanticus. After sunset, night herping may reveal geckos and desert snakes that become active once temperatures fall.

Today the route continues further south toward Assa, entering the wider landscapes of the Moroccan Sahara. Vast stony plains, scattered hills, and dry riverbeds provide ideal conditions for desert reptiles.Searches in this region may reveal species such as the White-bellied Carpet Viper (Echis leucogaster), Desert Monitor (Varanus griseus), and the Desert Horned Viper (Cerastes cerastes). Evening hours are often the most productive as reptiles emerge when the desert cools.

After breakfast the journey turns west toward the Atlantic coast and the town of Tan-Tan. The route crosses wide desert plains where reptiles are sometimes observed near rocky outcrops or along quiet tracks.

The coastal environment around Tan-Tan offers a different set of habitats compared to the interior desert. As night falls, geckos and other nocturnal reptiles often become active along sandy plains and quiet coastal roads.

During the morning the surrounding desert and coastal habitats near Tan-Tan may be explored further, providing additional opportunities to locate reptiles that were not observed earlier in the tour.Later in the day the return north begins along the Atlantic coast toward Sidi Ifni. The region’s rocky valleys and coastal plains can again offer good conditions for reptile activity during the evening.

After breakfast, the final drive follows the Atlantic coast north toward Agadir. The journey passes through the fertile Souss Valley, where occasional stops may be made to observe birds or wildlife.Arrival in Agadir is expected in the afternoon, marking the end of the private Morocco herping photography tour.
