5 Days Morocco Desert Wildlife & Photography Tour

Your Moroccan wildlife adventure starts in Marrakech before departing toward the south through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains. Along the journey, the scenery changes dramatically from busy city streets to peaceful valleys, traditional Berber villages, and striking rocky landscapes.

After approximately five hours of driving, you arrive in Boumalne Dades, a region well known for its rugged beauty and excellent birding locations. In the late afternoon, you visit the Valley of Birds, an impressive desert habitat where species such as the Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Crowned Sandgrouse, and Cream-colored Courser can often be observed.

As daylight fades, the warm desert tones create perfect lighting conditions for wildlife and landscape photography.

Following breakfast, the journey continues toward the gateway of the Sahara Desert. During the drive to Merzouga, you pass through rocky plateaus, scattered oases, and wide desert plains while the first golden dunes begin to appear on the horizon.

The route itself offers interesting wildlife opportunities, including pharaoh eagle Owl, other Birds, desert reptiles, and occasionally foxes moving across the open terrain.

Upon arrival in Merzouga, settle into your desert lodge and enjoy some relaxation time before heading into the dunes for a sunset photography walk. The changing colors of the Sahara during golden hour provide extraordinary photo opportunities. Overnight in the desert.

Before sunrise, you leave by 4x4 to explore remote areas of the Sahara. Early morning is ideal for observing desert birdlife, and you may encounter species such as sandgrouse, African Desert Warbler, and the elusive Egyptian Nightjar. If conditions are favorable, there is also a chance to spot the impressive African Houbara Bustard.

After returning for lunch and some rest, the afternoon is dedicated to your first Fennec Fox tracking session. Accompanied by experienced local guides, you search for these fascinating desert foxes as they slowly emerge around sunset.

Their shy behavior and the magical evening light create an unforgettable wildlife photography experience.

Today focuses on the remarkable reptiles that survive in the harsh Sahara environment. Together with local guides, you explore remote desert zones searching for species such as the Horned Viper, Cerastes cerastes, and the Desert Monitor.

Following lunch and relaxation at the lodge, you head back into the dunes for another Fennec Fox photography session, giving you additional chances to capture unique moments during sunset.

Later in the evening, after dinner, prepare for a special night photography outing. Under clear skies filled with stars, you will search for nocturnal desert creatures including jerboas, Cheeseman’s Gerbil, and hedgehogs while experimenting with low-light photography techniques.

Your final day begins early with an exciting ATV ride across the dunes before sunrise. The soft morning light transforms the Sahara into a spectacular natural studio, ideal for both wildlife and landscape photography.

During the morning session, you continue tracking Fennec Foxes and photographing the peaceful beauty of the desert at dawn. Additional optional photography time is available for those who wish to extend the experience.

After some rest at the lodge, the adventure concludes with one final sunset outing into the dunes, offering a last opportunity to capture the magic of the Sahara and its unique wildlife.
